Scientific Name : Thelymitra media
Common Name : Tall sun-orchid
Height : 1000 mm
Description : Sun orchids have all six Perianth segments similar in size, shape and colour, with the Labellum not markedly different from the other Petals. This is the most spectacular sun-orchid in the Park. It has a single, stiff, channelled leaf at the base, up to 300mm long. The stem is stout, with several small, brownish, sheathing Cauline leaves. The stem bears a spike of 3 to 30 flowers. The Perianth segments are usually blue, with fine darker veins, Ovate and pointed, 15mm long. The Column is whitish, 7mm long, with a blackish collar, It has three lobes. The centre lobe is short, with a yellow Glandular rim. The side lobes form two short arms, ending in a tuft of whitish hairs.
Habitat : Open forests.
Distribution : New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. In Victoria common in the Eastern half of the state. Common in the Fosters Gully section of the Park, especially on Stringybark Ridge.
Flowering Season : October and November
