Scientific Name : Speculantha parviflora
Common Name : Tiny greenhood
Height : 200 mm
Description : A tiny little inconspicuous orchid, flowering in late autumn. There are 4 to 10, Ovate leaves, up to 20mm long, in a tiny rosette flat on the ground on non-flowering plants and on a side shoot beside the flowering stem. The stem bears 2 to 4 small, sheathing, Cauline leaves. There are 1 to 12 flowers, each about 10mm long. Each flower is in the Axil of a small Lanceolate Bract and is turned inwards to face the stem. The Dorsal Sepal and lateral Petals combine to form the Galea, which forms a hood around both sides of and over the Column, with a distinct point turned towards the stem. The lateral Sepals are joined for most of their length and have a distinct hump, just before they diverge sharply to form two upright points on either side of the Galea. The Labellum is Ovate, but is almost completely concealed between the Galea and the Sepals.
Habitat : Open forests on sandy soils.
Distribution : Queensland to Victoria and Tasmania. Widespread in Victoria, except fpr the North-West. In the Park, thinly scattered on Stringybark Ridge, Silvertop Hill and above the East side of Fosters Gully.
Flowering Season : April and May
Family : Orchidaceae
