Owl-like nocturnal bird, 350 to 450 mm. Soft mottled grey, with a broad hooked beak, opening wide. Eye yellow. Often seen on roads on warm wet nights, looking for frogs. Voice a low, slow oom-oom-oom, several syllables and then repeated after a long pause. Roosts on a tree branch in the open, but very hard to spot as it camouflages itself to look like part of the branch. |

Mostly in open eucalyptus forest but may be found anywhere, where there are trees. Feeds at night mainly on the ground. |

|
Throughout Australia, wherever there are trees. Not often seen in the Park, but has been recorded on spotlight walks in Fosters Gully. |
