Scientific Name : Danaus plexippus
Common Name : Monarch or wanderer
Description : A large conspicuous butterfly, wingspan 110mm. Colour of upperwings is a rich deep orange, with a predominately black border and conspicuous black veins. Underwing similar, but with the orange much paler, alomost cream-coloured.
Habitat : Mainly sub-tropical regions, wherever its food pant the milkweed grows. Migratory and therefore may turn up anywhere.
Distribution : Native to North America, but has migrated to Australia and is now well established. Common from Queensland to Northern Victoria. Very uncommon in Gippsland, but has been recorded once in Fosters Gully
Flying Season : November December January February March April May
Family : Nymphalidae
