Scientific Name : Corybas diemenicus
Common Name : Veined helmet-orchid
Height : 30 mm in flower
Description : A tiny, ground-hugging, winter flowering orchid. Most commonly seen as dense colonies of single circular leaves, flat on the ground. The leaf is light green above, with the underside paler, with a frosted texture. The solitary flower grows on a stem of only 10mm, which extends to 100mm after flowering to improve dispersal of seeds. The flower is deep reddish-purple, shaped like a helmet. The Dorsal Sepal forms a broad hood 20mm long and 15mm wide. The lateral Sepals and Petals are greatly reduced, only 4mm long, white, almost hair-like. The Labellum is 15mm across, there is a conspicuous white boss in the centre, with the margins prominently veined and coarsely toothed.
Habitat : Damp shady positions in forests, often in dense colonies.
Distribution : New South Wales to South Australia and Tasmania. In Victoria common through the South and East of the state. Common in Fosters Gully, on Stringybark Ridge and around Silvertop Hill.
Flowering Season : July August September
Family : Orchidaceae
