Scientific Name : Belenois java
Common Name : Caper white
Description : A medium sized butterfly, wingspan 60mm. Upperwings prredominantly white, but with thick black and white borders to the wings. Underwings a network of black veins, surrounding white marks each with a spot of yellow. Caterpillars feed exclusively on species of caper (Capparis species). The adults periodically perform large scale migrations so that they appear well away from their food plants. One such mass migration occurred in 1998, when some were seen in the park.
Habitat : The drier parts of Australia, wherever its food plants are found.
Distribution : Mainland Australia generally. In Southern Victoria and Tasmania, an occasional migrant but can occur in large numbers. Recorded in the park December 1993 and again in 1998.
Flying Season : October November December
Family : Pieridae
