 A  Flowers in large oval heads with many flowers, each flower surrounded by an epicalyx of spiny bracts
 B  Flowers bright blue, each individual flower with 5 distinct petals, flowers in compact hemispherical heads, at the top of a tall slender stem, leaves mostly basal
